What will you do in your Chair?

Most of you know that I have a very serious affection for office supplies. I’m all about the paper calendar, coloured pens and whatever stationary I can justify buying (all of it…aaaallllll of it!!). Case-in-point: It’s not even September and I already have my 2016 day timer. I just couldn’t wait. Christmas holds nothing over a new pile of paper to write notes on.

This fall marks a big milestone for my eldest. He’s heading to Kindergarten and with that comes a great big wave of independence as he rides the school bus to and from school every day. This Mama’s heart is so excited for all the new experiences he’s going to have but also sad that he’s one step further into the world and away from me.

This year, he will be learning a whole bunch of new things. Just over the summer, he’s developed an affection for math, writing and is now showing interest in reading as well. Soon he’ll be bringing homework home and we’ll he’ll be up late finishing school projects that have zero value outside of school (seriously…did your volcano-building skills ever come in handy??).

Staples Canada has teamed up with some of us fretful mothers to bring you the “What will you do in your Chair” campaign. Though my little guy won’t be hitting the creative writing and mathematics circuit for a bit longer, I know that he is already developing a love of books and drawing. Much like his mom, his love of reading comes very naturally to him. I have such fond memories of walking to the library with my grandma and each of us coming home with a bag full of books to read. I hope that he and I can have similar memories over the years. One of my favorite places to be is in my reading chair with a book or my journal, just enjoying some solitude (or whatever you call that 5-minute span in your day when your kids aren’t screaming, crying and peeing on things…).

Staples was kind enough to send my boy a back-to-school kit to help him get ready for the fall and a beautiful reading chair of his own to start developing his own moments of solitude in his soon-to-be busy schedule.

I don’t know where his chair is going to take him but I imagine it will involve rides on Thomas the tank engine, Stanley cup victories for the Winnipeg Jets and maybe even a championship ring for the Toronto Raptors (give the kid credit…he has high hopes!). I know he’ll be busy colouring his world red like Lightening McQueen, green like Percy and everything in between. I hope that he’ll have fond memories of listening to music in his chair, of relaxing and enjoying some of the same books I read as a child. I know that he’ll develop more imagination, more creativity and more knowledge with each passing week and I’m so excited to watch that part of him grow and light up the world around him.

Your turn: What do you think will happen in your chair or your kids’ chair this coming school year? We’d love to hear your stories too! Share them using the hashtag #BTSReady and feel free to leave a link to them in the comments!
