When my oldest was born, the labor/delivery didn’t go exactly as planned. The short of it is that I was induced and he went into crisis well before I was dilated enough to deliver him. One emergency c-section later and we were both in a state of shock. Definitely not how I pictured my journey into motherhood beginning.

It’s fairly common for babies born via c-section to be a bit more mucousy and have some breathing difficulties at first. My boy was no different. For the first couple of weeks, he struggled with trying to get all that junk out of his lungs and was constantly waking up choking and needing a (literal) pat on the back to help him out. As new parents who had zero experience with babies, we were out of our league with this one. I remember how we’d both jump every time he made a single noise or coughed and how much I was afraid of sleeping through something critical.

After a couple of weeks, he settled and we eventually settled down as well. It wasn’t ideal but it also wasn’t uncommon. A lot of new parents experience some form of anxiety when welcoming their new bundle into the world. Heck, a lot of second and third time parents do as well. I’ve already mentioned my anxiety over the arrival of my little girl.

We’ve never been ones to rely on monitors and the one we did buy for our oldest son was…well…a piece of crap. It didn’t work well and when we tried to use it for our second, it just plain didn’t work. We talked about replacing it with something better but we just never quite got around to doing it.

Snuza Trio Baby Monitor

With our third child, we definitely knew that we needed something because with two active (read: LOUD) boys, we need some separation so she can sleep but also want to know that everything is ok with her if we’re outside or in the basement playing. I’m definitely less paranoid than before but at the same time, I know there is some amount of freedom that comes with being able to step away from the baby and still know that she is ok.

The monitor is so small but the picture is fantastic.

I recently received a Snuza Trio Plus Mobile Baby Video, Sound and Movement Monitor to use with the Little Lady and I’m already hooked on this monitor. Not only is it a video monitor that is small enough to easily go with you throughout the house, it also includes two-way communication (so you can talk to baby through the monitor without having to physically get out of bed and tend to your child at 3 in the morning be in the room with your child if you know that the sound of your voice will soothe them. It also comes with the Snuza Hero monitor to add that final bit of peace of mind to any parent, be it with their first or fourth child.

What is the Snuza Hero?

Snuza Hero Monitor

Snuza Hero Monitor

Snuza Hero is portable and easy-to-use movement monitor which clips onto baby’s diaper to ensure that normal movement is maintained. Hero detects even the slightest abdominal movement and will alert you if your baby’s movements are very weak or fall to less than 8 movements per minute. If no abdominal movement is detected at all for a period of 15 seconds, Hero will vibrate gently. Often this vibration is enough to rouse the baby, and Hero will revert to monitoring mode. After three vibration/rouse incidents, the Rouse Warning will alert you to the fact that your baby’s abdominal movements have stopped for 15 seconds on three occasions. If no further movement is detected for another 5 seconds, an alarm will sound to alert you.

Ultimately, the Hero gives you peace of mind in knowing that your baby is safe. Because it clips directly onto baby’s diaper, the accuracy of movement is much better than motion monitors that sit under the mattress. The only drawback may be for those babies who insist on sleeping on their tummies, I’m not sure how well it would work in those cases. Most newborns though are put (and sleep well) on their backs.

We absolutely love our Snuza monitoring system. The video is so crisp and the audio is clear. It really gives us peace of mind in those moments when we would otherwise be questioning ourselves. We’re all sleeping a little better at night. I think this would be a great gift for an expectant mom, especially if she’s already overflowing in diaper shirts and receiving blankets. Perhaps it’s not going to garner the same “Ooo’s” and “Awww’s” but I guarantee that you will get a heap of thanks from the parents for a long time to come.

I’ll post a pic of the Little Lady sporting her Hero on Instagram soon. Right now, her belly button stump is just too nasty-looking to share. Once it falls off (shudder), I’ll clip it on and let you see how it looks on her.
