Mayhem Monday: Running for Me

Happy Monday and happy Terry Fox day! I love long weekends and this one has been awesome! Hubby went back to work last week after a week off and had to put in some overtime so we’ve been really grateful to have an extra day at home with him. We’ve been hitting up the park, going for runs, playing in the yard and enjoying the cooler weather after a couple of weeks of insane heat.

This weekend, I managed a couple of runs. Saturday had me home alone with just the baby and while she napped, I (grudgingly) jumped on the treadmill. I would have much rather been outside but…well, sleeping babies. Thankfully, now that we’re in our Netflix phase, I could watch a show on my phone which made the miles SOOOOOO much more bearable. It was so nice out that even hubby went for a run this weekend. As I’m writing this, I’m just home from an absolutely gorgeous 5k. It was easily the best weather ever to run. Warm, sunny, breezy.

I’ve also realized that heart rate training (which I’ve semi-abandoned–>post for another day) and hill training have been solid gold for my runs. I did 5.5 miles on the ‘mill on Saturday and I could have gone for much longer. I felt energized, peppy and strong. Same with today’s run. I’ve made a point of using my awesome Polar M400 to track runs, mileage, pace, HR etc but only for the purpose of training. Those stats are mostly just for me and I’ve deleted any other option for sharing publicly where my running/fitness is taking me (i.e., no more daily mile account. Too bad I didn’t check out how many donuts I’d earned before deleting; I was really hoping to cash in). There is far, far, FAR too much scrutiny and comparison out there and it’s just plain taxing on the brain. I mean honestly…who in the heck should care how fast you run? No one. If you’re challenging yourself and pushing, then does it even matter what your splits are to those around you? Heck to the N-O. This really hit home for me when I was at a personal training course (again…more on that some other time) recently and the topic of Spartan came up and I had mentioned that I’d participated and the first question was “what was your finishing time?” followed swiftly by “it took you that long to run 5k?”…by. the. instructor. Talk about deflating and humiliating for me, especially from someone who was in the process teaching us how to train people of all different fitness levels professionally. Ouch. Further validation that my pace is my business and even though I’ll never place in a race or age group or anything, that’s not why I do what I do. I do it because I love it and I was starting to lose sight of that.

Pace shmace...these legs were happy to move no matter how fast or slow!

Now before I jump off my soap box, let’s all high-five one another, encourage one another and give a big, happy group hug…

Getting back on track…this week. My last official hill training session. I’m determined to continue with hills. I don’t like them but darn it, they are effective! I need to figure out how to keep them on my schedule until winter. It’s going to be cool this week too so hopefully that will carry over to the weekend. I’m still on the fence about a fall race. I have a couple of my radar but haven’t committed to either. No half marathon for me this year but another 10K seems like a good idea. Stay tuned for that.

Have an awesome week! And if you can, get out and enjoy a few miles in honour of Terry Fox!

Mayhem Monday: Doing the Vacation Dance.

And we are officially in vacation mode! FINALLY!! We have not had any vacation time together since Christmas. To say some quality family time is overdue is an understatement. I’m actually kind of amazed we made it this long without a break. This week is also hubby’s birthday on the 22nd so we’re excited to… Continue Reading
