Recently, I had a gym pet peeve moment. Maybe it’s the hormones or maybe it was that it was Monday, I was tired and my coffee wasn’t doing what I needed it to (i.e. revive my still-slumbering brain into a usable piece of genetic mastery). I was on the dreadmill, happily watching Live with Kelly & Michael as I do every morning that I’m dreading it at the gym. There were a few other people around and I was just doing my thing, laughing along with the show. Someone comes and hops on the treadmill next to me. No biggie, my gym is thankfully pro-personal-space so I don’t get the heebie-jeebies when someone is sweating too close to me (as a reference, the gym in one of my old apartment buildings was not so organized and it was not uncommon for you to be assaulted by the sweat of another human being whilst doing your cardio. I still have nightmares). All was good until she decided to change tv shows (plural…there are 3 screens to watch various shows on) without so much as a blink to the other people in the area who were plugged in and watching what was on.
I don’t know why but this bothered me so much. That time of day is generally a pretty quiet time at the gym (hence why I prefer to go) but it’s always been an unwritten rule that if you want to change the channel, you check with the others in the area to make sure they’re not already watching. It’s a courtesy and respectful. No one said anything and I was still able to watch what I was watching but it definitely got me thinking about the unwritten gym etiquette book in my brain. I definitely have a lot of little pet peeves (slamming weights, lifting way heavier that you can and looking like your spine is going to snap from the pressure, sweaty butt marks on equipment that hasn’t been wiped down etc). I’m all for common courtesy in the gym and maybe past experience has made me a bit sensitive but now all I can think of are my gym pet peeves.
So rather than be bitter at people for things that are probably not that big of a deal, let’s have some fun with this. What are some your gym/pool/running pet peeves? I’ve already listed a few, but here are a few more. Let’s have some laughs on this Tuesday, shall we?
Really loud grunting
Really loud grunting that is an attempt to mask really loud farting.
Hoarding half the gym by tossing various towels, water bottles and sweat shirts on equipment you’re using once every 15 minutes.
Bad Breath (seriously, if I can smell your breath while mouth-breathing, you’re either way too close to me or you need a tic tac)
Making fun of other patrons (that will get you a 10 second day-dream in my head where I punch you in the face)
Bad lifting form (seriously, lift lighter and properly so you don’t wreck yourself)
Leaving a treadmill running while you jump off to go do something else.
Standing on the side of a running treadmill so you can text without falling off (though you do get small kudos for not attempting to multitask to your own detriment)
Not cleaning equipment when you’re done with it <gag>
