My Gym Pet Peeves

Recently, I had a gym pet peeve moment. Maybe it’s the hormones or maybe it was that it was Monday, I was tired and my coffee wasn’t doing what I needed it to (i.e. revive my still-slumbering brain into a usable piece of genetic mastery). I was on the dreadmill, happily watching Live with Kelly & Michael as I do every morning that I’m dreading it at the gym. There were a few other people around and I was just doing my thing, laughing along with the show. Someone comes and hops on the treadmill next to me. No biggie, my gym is thankfully pro-personal-space so I don’t get the heebie-jeebies when someone is sweating too close to me (as a reference, the gym in one of my old apartment buildings was not so organized and it was not uncommon for you to be assaulted by the sweat of another human being whilst doing your cardio. I still have nightmares). All was good until she decided to change tv shows (plural…there are 3 screens to watch various shows on) without so much as a blink to the other people in the area who were plugged in and watching what was on.

<irked>

I don’t know why but this bothered me so much. That time of day is generally a pretty quiet time at the gym (hence why I prefer to go) but it’s always been an unwritten rule that if you want to change the channel, you check with the others in the area to make sure they’re not already watching. It’s a courtesy and respectful. No one said anything and I was still able to watch what I was watching but it definitely got me thinking about the unwritten gym etiquette book in my brain. I definitely have a lot of little pet peeves (slamming weights, lifting way heavier that you can and looking like your spine is going to snap from the pressure, sweaty butt marks on equipment that hasn’t been wiped down etc). I’m all for common courtesy in the gym and maybe past experience has made me a bit sensitive but now all I can think of are my gym pet peeves.

Gym Fun

So rather than be bitter at people for things that are probably not that big of a deal, let’s have some fun with this. What are some your gym/pool/running pet peeves? I’ve already listed a few, but here are a few more. Let’s have some laughs on this Tuesday, shall we?

Really loud grunting

Really loud grunting that is an attempt to mask really loud farting.

Hoarding half the gym by tossing various towels, water bottles and sweat shirts on equipment you’re using once every 15 minutes.

Bad Breath (seriously, if I can smell your breath while mouth-breathing, you’re either way too close to me or you need a tic tac)

Making fun of other patrons (that will get you a 10 second day-dream in my head where I punch you in the face)

Bad lifting form (seriously, lift lighter and properly so you don’t wreck yourself)

Leaving a treadmill running while you jump off to go do something else.

Standing on the side of a running treadmill so you can text without falling off (though you do get small kudos for not attempting to multitask to your own detriment)

Not cleaning equipment when you’re done with it <gag>

I’ve shared some of mine, now I’d love for you to share some of yours so we can all laugh together (I bet there’s at least one of you who’s thinking “people who take dumb selfies at the gym are the worst!!” —->guilty as charged<—-

Running Injury Update: How am I REALLY doing?

I haven’t talked much about my running injury in the past few weeks other than to mention if my leg has been sore on a run or not. I figured it was time to give you an update on my progress and how I’m doing and where my running is right now. First, a quickContinue Reading

Mayhem Monday: Birthday and Olympic Withdrawal

Another week has come and gone. Last week was a short week because we had a holiday on Monday. Add that to my day off on Wednesday and a 3-day work-week isn’t too shabby. The downside is that 5 days worth of work still needs to be done. I was definitely ready for the weekend.Continue Reading

The Path I Plan on Walking in 2014

As I look ahead to 2014, I’m approaching it with a surprising amount of ease. Being more or less benched these last 5 months has forced me to slow down and re-evaluate what it is I want to accomplish in 2014. A lot of thought, prayer and even a few tears were shed but IContinue Reading

You spin me right ’round baby, right ’round

Monday, I stepped outside my comfort zone and took a class at my work gym. I’m not opposed to classes or even overly intimidated by them. I don’t expect to be great but I don’t take myself so seriously that anything less than perfection is unacceptable (anyone who’s seen me do Zumba is currently noddingContinue Reading

Scenes from the Week

The Post where I forgot my Undies at the Gym

Yesterday at the gym was a run day. Since my run was 4km and I had some extra time after, I did a quick chest and back workout. I was a sweaty mess after, like I always am and hit the showers after so I wouldn’t cause nausea around the office from my trenchant odourous armpits.Continue Reading

Quick Body Blast Circuit

After last week’s killer leg circuit that left me feeling like I had bowling balls in my butt cheeks for 2 days, I decided to try something different so that I could still run and not wince on Friday. Also, last week we had a holiday on Monday which meant no work! And no workContinue Reading

Killer Leg Workout

Now that I have (mostly) uninterrupted access to the gym at work, I am really taking advantage of having an hour to myself to workout (and shower since we’re renovating our bathrooms and haven’t had a shower for a few weeks now). I decided that I wanted to spice up my routine and put togetherContinue Reading
