With your baby’s first Holiday season just around the corner, it’s certainly an exciting time. From experiencing a family holiday, to enjoying new sights and smells, there is so much to look forward to.
Naturally, one of the things that should be top-of-mind is what your baby will taste this Holiday season.
While there is great joy in showing your baby everything that this wonderful holiday has to offer, it’s also important to ensure you know what they can and cannot eat and how to offer them these wonderful foods. To help you navigate the holiday, please see the below Registered Dietitian approved tips for baby’s first Holiday meal:
Did you know turkey can be a first food? Iron-rich meats are a great choice for introducing to your baby after the age of 6 months. Using a hand-held blender on pulse, puree the meat until it is very smooth in texture. If the consistency is thick, try adding breast milk, formula or water to the mixture. The final product should drip easily from a spoon. Fattier meat from the turkey thigh or leg works best for this baby-friendly version of a holiday staple. As your baby gets older you can puree less and include some texture.
Variety of Veggies
Heaps of buttery mashed regular or sweet potatoes are another holiday favourite. For baby, set aside some of the mashed mixture before adding butter, cheese, bacon or sour cream and serve them the plain mash. For very young infants (6-8 months), thin the mixture with formula or breast milk to ensure it isn’t too thick. Similarly, the veggies from items like green bean casserole and glazed carrots can all be pureed and served to baby.
Know the Ingredients
While we all have our traditional family recipes, if you’re dining with a new family or a new recipe is introduced, ensure you know what’s in the food before serving to baby. Things like nuts, heavy cream and spicy seasonings can be hidden from the naked eye in casseroles and stuffing. Be sure to double check with your host on these items ahead of time. While your baby doesn’t yet know what dessert is, you can still offer them some if you like. Tasty treats like homemade pumpkin pie can be easily transformed for your baby. For babies six-to-eight months in age, scoop out pie filling and puree it until fine and runny, adding formula or breast milk to thin the texture. Foods to Avoid
While adults enjoy loading their turkey with condiments like gravy and cranberry sauce, serving these items to your baby isn’t a good idea. Babies don’t need the added sodium and sugar these condiments contain. Stick to plain foods as your baby gets used to consuming and digesting solids.
No matter how you decide to celebrate you baby’s first holiday, it’s sure to be one to always remember. Take lots of pictures, invest in creating family memories and, most of all, have fun!

PC® Streusel Topped Sweet Potato Bake
This year, while you sit down with the family to eat turkey, pumpkin pie and this sensational steusel topped sweet potato bake, your baby can enjoy an infant-friendly version of the same holiday flavours with PC® Organics Pumpkin & Sweet Potato with Turkey and Quinoa Junior Entree.
Per serving: 210 calories, fat 10 g, sodium 75 mg, carbohydrate 29 g, fibre 3 g, protein 2 g
¼ cup (50 mL) cold PC® Organics Salted Fresh Churned Butter, cubed
⅓ cup (75 mL) PC® 100% Pure Orange Juice with Pulp
¼ cup (50 mL) PC® 100% Pure Maple Syrup
2 tbsp (25 mL) PC® Organics Salted Fresh Churned Butter
½ cup (125 mL) no name® Pecans – coarsely chopped
⅓ cup (75 mL) no name® All Purpose Flour
3 tbsp (45 mL) packed brown sugar
4 sweet potatoes (about 3lb/1.5 kg), peeled and cut in 1-inch (2.5 cm) chunks
1. Preheat oven to 400° F (200° C). Spray 8-inch (2 L) square glass baking dish with PC® The Virtuous Canola Oil Cooking.
2. In bowl and using fingertips, rub pecans, flour, brown sugar and ¼ cup (50 mL) butter together until mixture resembles coarse meal. This will be your streusel topping. Set aside.
3. In large saucepan, combine sweet potatoes and cold water to cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender. Drain. Return to saucepan. Add orange juice, maple syrup and 3 tbsp (25 mL) butter. Using potato masher, mash until well mixed. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with streusel topping.
4. Bake uncovered in centre of oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until topping is golden. Let it stand for 10 minutes before serving.
