Fukumoto Friday: Week 38

I think the running theme for this year has been Stepping out of my Comfort zone. I need a shirt made up or something. I’m usually the person who likes to stick to what I know I can do and do well. Risk has never been a huge part of me because with risk, there’s risk of failure. This last year has really left me unsettled with “safe” and knowing that safety is great, but it’s also unfulfilling in a lot of ways. Staying safe means you can’t grow, change or improve. Sure, it means you may not ever experience failure but it also limits success.

Taking risks is so tough because the reward of it is never 100% guaranteed. When I ran my first half marathon, it was a huge risk because it meant running a distance I’d never run before, maybe not finishing or hating the entire process along the way. But the reward of it was doing something I’d never done before, something that many people told me I couldn’t do, and doing it for me. The reward of it was doing 3 more, improving along the way, learning along the way.

Spartan this year? So far out of my comfort zone that I very nearly cried when my registration confirmation came through because I was officially committed to something that scared the heck out of me. I had so much anxiety about it because the risk (for me) was huge. Did it affect my race? Absolutely it did. My head got the better of me at times BUT at the same time, the risk paid off because I had fun, I finished and I know I’ll do it again next year with more confidence and a plan in place to (hopefully) do better.

Given that it’s been a few weeks since I did anything risky, I’ve accepted a new challenge that makes my stomach do that little flippy flop of excitement and nerves: I “upgraded” from the shorter 5k distance for Dirty Donkey mud race next weekend to the longer, more challenging one. Eek! I’m excited but again…new race, new unknowns, new challenge. The biggest being the running distance. That’s what I found to be the hardest part of Spartan and I know it will be the hardest part of Donkey. But I’m up for the challenge.

This whole outside of comfort thing is tough for me, it’s tough for many people, maybe everyone. We live in an age of comforts. Doing things that threaten that, in whatever capacity that comes in, is never easy but I’m learning with every challenge that even in the so-called “failures”, there’s always rewards. You sometimes have to look harder to find them.
