Mayhem Monday: New week, new goals

After a whirlwind weekend, we’re back at Monday already? Dang.

Most people would think a whirlwind weekend would include some last second trip to some exotic beach for a couple of days, lots of sun, surf, cocktails and romance. My weekend whirlwind was more along the lines of a less than exotic trip to Grunthal, Manitoba for a Spartan race (recap here), lots of sun, horribly awkward tan lines and bruises and hoping that I can get through at least one 24 hour period without the bodily fluids of someone else landing on any part of my person (big fail on that one…a hygienic life is truly impossible with kids…). But hey…that’s my kind of weekend.

Now that the experience of Spartan is done and settling in, I can look ahead to Dirty Donkey, another obstacle race of slightly (or so I’m told) less craziness. I have a month until I tackle that one so that will be my main goal for training for the next 4 weeks. As I eluded to in my Spartan recap, the run did me in. I know I don’t have enough time to really make any significant gains on run strength but I think I’m going to look into a fall road race as incentive to at least get out and run more than once per week outside of hill training on Tuesdays. I thought that would be enough for Spartan but I was wrong. Live and learn as we move forward, right? I think I may also work on a more graceful approach to obstacle racing because though my methods gave me great success on the obstacles (with minimal pain the day after, I might add), the amount of black and blue on my body is a clear indication that a) I bruise way too easily, b) I am living up to my tall and awkward title and c) I look like someone actually tried to beat some common sense into me with a blunt object (and failed…I still have none).

This week I am skipping out on hill training to get my eyes checked. I’m getting low on contact lenses which means my daily disposables are quickly turning into monthly disposables which means I’m guaranteeing myself some kind of gross eye-gooey infection that will see me wearing glasses that have no hope or prayer staying on my greasy face while I try and pound out some of the inevitable burpees that creep their way into my workouts. Good times.

Have a great week everyone! And a huge congrats to everyone who raced this weekend!
