Mayhem Monday: Countdown to Spartan

Happy Monday! I hope everyone enjoyed their version of a short work week. I know with Canada Day falling on a Wednesday, I had no clue what day it was or where I was going all week. Thankfully, all was well in the end and though it was busy, there was also time to relax and enjoy the company of friends.

We also added a kiddie pool to our back yard so we could compete with all our cool cat neighbours who have big pools. I think we chose well. So far, it’s a hit and even my timid 3 year old was excited to go in. Our summer of fun is clearly ready to launch into overdrive.

This week is also the final countdown to my Spartan Sprint on Saturday. The nerves are definitely starting to take over. I shift from the mindset of “I can do this” to “I hope I can do this” to “I’m not strong enough to do this” to “I’m going to make a complete ass of myself trying to do this”. I know in the end I’ll be fine and am reasonably expecting around 200 penalty burpees (30 per missed obstacle). I’m well trained, have put in the work and can’t really do much to change the outcome at this point anyway. I know the obstacles I will do well on and I know the ones I will not. I lack a lot of the upper body strength I need to do certain things (wall climbs, monkey bars, rope climb if I’m super fatigued) but I have the lower body strength to do other things. Going in, I have no expectations because this is completely new for me. I’m going to take my time, have fun and cheer on my teammates as they blow by me. Maybe I’ll even get a sympathy boost over the wall :) Either way, I’m sure I’m going to feel pretty darn awesome in the end (after an ice bath and a bottle of wine) and proud of my accomplishment.

Given the big race next week, I opted to play it safe and not do my trail run this weekend. My calves have been feeling so much better but knowing that it took well over a week for them to loosen up last time, I didn’t want to take any chances. I still have my hill training on Tuesday and my two regular workouts so that will be punishment enough for the week. I want to feel fresh and ready to go on Saturday!

Have a great week and prayers going out to everyone dealing with wild fires out there. We haven’t seen true sunshine in a week and we’re no where near any active fires so please stay safe to those of you who are.
