Mayhem Monday: Hello Humidity!

Well, we survived week one of Summer. It went surprisingly well. No one got bored, temper tantrums were at a minimum and we were even able to enjoy some outside time as a family. Win!

At first, I was worried that we would run out of things to do within the first day but as I type this, my 5 year old is sitting on a chair behind me in the kitchen watching the clock change time while he awaits morning snack. He’s been doing this for the last 20 minutes. I wish I was making this up. Mental note: teaching child to tell time…genius.

This week, we’re dealing with my mortal enemy: humidity. Oh how I loath humidity. Nothing like stepping outside your front door and instantly being coated in a sheen of sweat. This pretty much means that if I’m expecting to run, I’ll either be doing it later at night, after the kids are in bed, or I need to get my butt out of bed early enough in the morning to get done and back home before I melt. Easier said than done when early means out the door no later than 6:30 (the first time I typed that, I said 5:30…I nearly fainted). As much as I LOVE early morning running, I HATE early morning getting out of bed. If I could close my eyes at night, fall asleep and wake up already fueled, hydrated, post-poo (yep, went there) and on the running path ready to go, the world would be all rainbows and unicorns.

I was able to get out the door around 9:30ish on Sunday (in my defense, the night before saw a 1:30am bedtime and wine. Ok…so maybe that’s more offensive than defensive but come on people, I’m only human!!). I ran with a friend which was a blissful welcome change to always running solo. I’m also trying to change my running form to lose the obnoxious heel strike I have (no wonder my knees hurt!). I’d say there was success all around. And the fact that we beat the rain…sweet!

I also have week 2 of hill training in preparation for Spartan next month. Last week was fully tolerable and doable with minimal wishes for a quick and painless death as I climbed garbage hill time and time again. This week we’ll be heading out in the heat and humidity and likely upping the intensity a wee bit. After a Sunday with a ridiculous amount of rain, hail, thunder etc, the hill is bound to be muddy and slippery. Epicness is guaranteed.

I’m also starting another couple of fitness courses that will see me doing quite a bit of reading over the coming weeks. I’m really excited but also wondering if I’m not a bit crazy for trying to fit all this in while my kids are running around destroying my house and sanity. I’m pretty sure it will be ok and if I can survive this, I can pretty much conquer anything. Mind you, if my 5 year old is going to spend his entire summer staring at a digital microwave clock, I may be able to complete a PhD.
