Fukumoto Friday: Week 19

19 weeks…whaaaaaaa? That went fast. Kind of mind-blowing to think that my girl, who’s now of the flip side of 6 months was only 10 weeks old when I started on this journey. If I could have even caught a glimpse of what the last 19 weeks were going to bring me, I wouldn’t have believed it. Suffice it to say, it’s been one. wild. ride. But a fantastic one. One day, I’ll fill you in on some details, but not today. Not yet.


Anyways, we’re heading into the last week of this phase. I’ve said several times before that I’ve loved this phase but there is definitely a bit of hate for it too. Tuesday burpee finisher…I’m looking right at you. Try as I may, I have not yet fully embraced the burpee. I don’t hate them. I kinda like them. But they undo me. Ever. Dang. Time. But, they have been a very good way of measuring my progress. Not in the number I can do but in how I’m able to do them. The first month, I could barely do 4-5 without my core collapsing, my lungs wanting to explode and there was no way I was going to jump my legs back. I stepped back. Gingerly. But with every week, I got a bit braver: stepping back turned to stepping back and jumping forward, then quasi-jumping back (I don’t recommend this…it’s likely as awkward-looking as it sounds) and forward, then jumping back and forward, then ditching the elevation and doing them from the floor. Every week, I can do a bit more, a bit stronger and with a bit more respect for the big B of the fitness world. Am I going to wear a shirt declaring my love for burpees? Likely not ever. But they definitely have my attention.

I’m also developing some pretty sweet callouses on my hands from the kettle bell swings. Epic. And painful. I’ve been revisiting the monkey bar phase of my youth where I would completely gross-out my mom with my blistered, pussy hands from hours of monkey bar swinging at school. I remember not slowly down even with my broken, beaten up hands pulsing at me. I guess there was always a bit of firey determination hiding in me :) Or stupidity. I think I’m finally starting to put all the elements of the swing together and get better at it. For some a simple looking move, it requires a lot of thought to properly execute. I’m about 85% there. I have 3 more cracks at the swings this phase. And then we’ll see what’s awaiting next go-round.

  1. Burpees….are my enemy. I really hate them. Good job on your improvements though! It’s crazy when progress seems super slow and then you look back over a longer period and have better perspective on far you’ve really come.
