Here we are, celebrating another birthday. 5 years old. Unreal. Wasn’t it just the other day we were adjusting to life as a family of 3? Learning to change diapers, give baths, never sleep? How is it that we’re about to enroll you in kindergarten this fall?
You have grown into such an amazing boy. The compassion that you show toward others is such a beautiful thing to watch. I love getting to sit back and see you blossom into a strong, independent little boy, eager to explore the world around you. You’re never too shy to ask questions or to make observations about the world around you. I love living life through your eyes. Eyes that don’t yet see injustice, don’t see discrimination and don’t see inequality. You live life with curiosity and excitement. Every day is the chance for a new adventure. I love the adventure that we’ve gone on together.
5 years old.
You’re making friends, becoming independent and ever so gradually, breaking free of the protective arms of your Mama. I won’t lie: it makes me sad to know that as each year passes by, you won’t have the same dependence on me as you once did. As much as I love watching you grow and explore, I miss the days when you needed to be carried, hugged and when you didn’t wipe away my kisses.
My prayer for you this year as that you stay innocent for just awhile longer. I pray that the problems and realities of the world we live in don’t affect you. I pray your heart stays protected and that you never try to change who God designed you to be for the sake of fitting in. I want you to conquer and move mountains. I want you to always have love and compassion for the people who matter most to you and acceptance and understanding for those who don’t.
And finally, sweet boy, I pray that you’ll let me hug and kiss you for just a little longer, that you’ll still hold my hand when you get scared and maybe even when you’re not scared. I pray that I can help you continue to grow the gifts you have, discover new gifts you didn’t think you did and always know that you can come to me with anything and everything.
I love you more than words. Now and forever.
Happy 5th Birthday Bubba Bear. Mama loves you immeasurably.
