Our Weekend Away and an Unexpected Injury

This past weekend, the family and I packed our bags and headed out of town for what will be our last outing as a family of 4. With baby due in a few short weeks and school starting for Fit Boy just as quickly (gasp! When did this happen!!), it was our last opportunity to get out and enjoy some quality time together.

As it turns out, my brother and his family have a time share just a few hours away from here and they happen to have a couple of extra rooms/beds and invited us up for a couple of nights. My boys love their cousins and the chance to get out into nature a bit (not that we were roughing it by any means) was just what I wanted and needed.

It actually ended up being the coldest weekend of the entire summer (I think at one point, I remarked to hubby that it really was a nice brisk November day) and along with the cold temperatures was a near constant rain/mist that made most outdoor activities near impossible. Still, we took advantage of bringing the double jogger, loaded up the boys, made sure they were warm and dry (cold, wet children are about as much fun as repeatedly poking yourself in the eye) and set out for a walk into the town.

It’s a small town and admittedly, very touristy but still nice. We took in the harbor, admired the lake and tried to get some nice pictures of the kids but it was too wet and way too cold so they were having none of it. Not to mention that I’m way to pregnant to be able to actually zip up anything I own so I was getting just as wet.

We did manage to find a great little park that was sheltered enough that the boys could run around and play and get their energy out. They must have succeeded because both were sound asleep by the time we had walked back to our cabin.

I also took advantage of the legendary bakery there to pick myself up a little snack to tide me over for the weekend. The cinnamon buns were fresh, warm and I could smell the maple ones from the back of the Chariot. The salted caramel steamer was equally as amazing. I’m pretty sure I had an orgasm. It was just. that. good. I’m sure the baby will vouch for that too.

A little something for lunch. Don't know what the rest of the family ate :)

Otherwise, we spent some time swimming in the pool at the nearby resort, watched movies with the kids and just generally took it easy for a couple of days.

The sad part of the weekend (aside from it ending and life needing to carry on as usual) was that our poor Mr. O. took a bit of a spill. He and his brother were sharing the sofabed in the living room and in spite of our attempts to block it off to prevent anyone from falling out, he still managed to fall out during our second (and final) night. After lots of hugs and kisses, he was sound asleep again and it wasn’t until the next morning that we realized he was hurt worse than a few bruises.

We made the decision to head back home a bit early and hubby dropped Mr. O. and I off at children’s urgent care while he and Fit Boy went home to unpack the van. In less than an hour, we’d been seen by the doctor, had x-rays and confirmed that Mr. O. had broken his clavicle and would be relegated to a sling for the next week or so. Definitely not the way we had planned on ending our weekend and summer but thankfully, it will heal quickly and he’ll be good as new again very soon. He’s also rocking his sling and working it to his advantage with the ladies.

All in all, a great weekend with the family. Just what this weary Mama needed :)

  1. So glad to hear you had a nice vacation away despite the cold weather. That’s sad Mr.O broke his clavicle, I know that hurts I broke mine about 10 years ago and it was painful. Nice thing is you don’t typically need surgery. I hope he feels better soon and pray he heals quickly and glad you still had a nice vacation away. :)

    • Thanks Kris. I’m just glad he waited until our last night there to break it :) He’s a trooper though and he hasn’t complained once about “having” to watch extra Thomas the Train shows to rest his arm ;)
