Disclosure: I was provided with a bag of each flavor The Good Bean offers in exchange for posting my overall thoughts on the product. All opinions are my own
I have to start out by saying a HUGE “I’m Sorry”. The wonderful people at the Good Bean sent me samples several months ago and this post just never got completed. That’s a huge black eye for me because it’s completely unacceptable. This pregnancy is killing me in more ways than one. For that, I am truly sorry for taking so bloody long to get this post finished.
I have tried countless times to roast my own chickpeas. Each time I’ve ended up with a result that’s half burnt, half chew, all gross. It reminds me of my dad’s attempt at frozen fish sticks when we were kids. Burnt on the outside and frozen on the inside. It still haunts us all to this day. No wonder I’m a vegetarian…but I digress.
I was contacted by the Good Bean to see if I would be interested in trying out their roasted chickpea snacks. Knowing my own failures in the kitchen, I was more than happy to say yes. I was super excited the day I came home to see a parcel waiting for me containing 6 bags of healthy goodness:
Smoky Chili and Lime
About the Good Bean: These snacks are Gluten Free, Nut Free, Heart Healthy, Low Fat, Vegan and Non-GMO verified. In business since Fall 2010, these little bean snacks have been growing in popularity and availability ever since. Starting out with 4 flavors and eventually adding another 3 to their list of snacks and I have no doubt there will be more in the future. In early 2012 they also launched a chickpea based fruit and NO-nut bar. I would love to get my hands on a few of these to try (though after the unforgivably tardy review post…I’m pretty sure I will never hear from the company again. Not that I blame them in any way).
So what do I think about this snack? I actually enjoy them very much. The sweet flavors aren’t my favorite but the Thai Coconut and the Sea Salt are definitely a hit. I like that it’s a simple snack that’s easy to pack on the go, not greasy, filling and safe for me to pack in my kids’ lunches for daycare without going against their daycare’s allergen restrictions. It’s a quick and simple way to sneak in a little extra protein into my day as well and I’m even able to control myself and not devour the entire bag in one sitting which means they last longer which stretches my budget, not my waistline. I will be packing these in my hospital bag when baby time arrives.
My kids and hubby gave them mixed reviews. They all essentially like them but I think the texture and weaker flavor (when compared to a traditionally unhealthy snack like chips) was a bit of a turn off for them. My 4 year old declared that they were good but “too chewy”. Not sure about that. My 2 year old seems to like the crunch which is usually all it takes to make him happy. Overall though, they do enjoy them.
For those that are new to this type of snack, you may be expecting them to be very, very flavorful, say, like a chip or cracker. I will warn you, the flavor is there but it’s not a strong one. You need to actually like chickpeas to enjoy this snack because that flavor isn’t masked. I personally love chickpeas so this wasn’t a stretch for me to enjoy. I like the creative flavors and the variety they offer as well. There really is something for everyone. The fact that they’ve been Non-GMO verified and are healthy really just elevates them to the next level. I’m always on the lookout for healthy snacks that my entire family can enjoy without worrying about what’s hidden behind the scenes that might not be so good for us.
In short, these little snacks are definitely not for everyone but I would encourage you to give them a try because I think you might be pleasantly surprised by them.
I’ve seen them locally at Costco which is great and there is a wider distribution available in the US. If all else fails, you can order them online and they offer free shipping with all orders over $25!
