How to Make your Own Deodorant

When it comes to finding ways to save money, I’m a bit of a geek. I don’t mind putting a little muscle into things if it means I can save a few dollars and have the knowledge of what’s going into and onto my body (and my kids). I’ve read a lot about homemade deodorants over the last year or so but always met with mixed results. I sweat…a lot. I also don’t always have time to shower right after I workout and prefer not to kill the plants until I can get 10 minutes to myself to shower. I was hesitant that there really was a natural DIY option out there that didn’t involve chemicals, unknown items are shelling out a lot of money, therefore making it a relatively fruitless venture.

I kind of set it aside for awhile and recently decided to take up the hunt again after seeing a few pins on pinterest boasting of a DIY version that really worked. I found about half a dozen different sites, all using a similar recipe with varying measurements. Since I had most of the stuff on hand, I decided to give it a try.

How to Make Deodorant

I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to make and how well it worked. I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks, including during workouts that have me nice and sweaty and it has held up.

I’ve struck gold! And all I needed were 4 ingredients: Coconut oil (which has natural anti-bacterial properties), arrowroot powder, baking soda and tea tree oil. The process is super simple but does take a few minutes but comes together nicely.

All you do is add 1/4 cup of arrowroot powder and 1/4 cup of baking soda to a bowl and stir to combine. After, add about 1/3 cup of coconut oil and work it in with a spoon until it’s well incorporated and the consistency of deodorant (paste-like but not runny). If you find that it’s still a bit dry and pebbly, add more coconut oil, 1 tbsp at a time (it will depend on how hard the coconut oil is). I ended up adding another 1 or so tbsp to get a good consistency. Then after, you can add a few drops of essential oils (I used tea tree so that if my hubby wanted, he could also use it and not smell girly) to give it more fragrance. You don’t really need to because the coconut oil makes it smell divine on its own.


Once you’re all done, you can store in an airtight container and apply daily with your fingers (about a pea-size portion is enough) or if you have an empty deodorant container, you can use that.


I’m not sure how long it will last but it makes about 1/2 a cup so I’m thinking about 6 months. I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks and it’s been great. I love the smell and so far, it’s worked just as well as any conventional deodorant but at a fraction of the cost and completely natural.

**Update: I’ve been told that if you don’t have arrowroot powder, you can substitute cornstarch but it doesn’t work as well. (I was able to find arrowroot powder at my local Bulk Barn store).

    • Is there anything coconut oil can’t do? I saw a blog recently where the woman writing showed this absolutely gyhugic container of coconut oil. She’s knows what she’s doing.

  1. I made mine with corn starch and it works great! Coconut oil, cornstarch, baking soda and lemon extract since I had no essential oil. It smells like lemon cookie and works great, no aluminum, which is why I tried it it the first place.
