I missed Mayhem Monday this week because it was a stat day here and most of my day was spent with my family. No apologies coming, family first, blog second. It was definitely much needed because on top of some awesome quality time with my kiddos and some friends we had over for dinner that we don’t get to spend nearly as much time with as we’d like, my house was kinda gross.
I find that in the summer, I don’t do much “make ahead” meals and we tend to spend those beautifully long, hot days grazing on snacks and making the most of being outside. Our summers are so short and winter’s so long that the last thing I want to do is spend a ton of time in the kitchen
burning cooking meals. This year, we actually unplugged and stopped using our little freezer in the basement and have just been using the fridge freezer. I thought it would be a cinch to keep clean and organized because it barely holds anything.
I was wrong.
I decided to clean it out a bit to take inventory of what we had in there. I’ll give you a moment to catch your breath and quell your overwhelming envy of the exciting life I lead………good? Ok, moving on.
CLEARLY, it had been awhile because I found “food” that pre-dated my youngest child (now nearly 21 months) and found a random package of ground beef. I’m assuming I bought it, not really sure when because the label was trapped under an inch of freezer burn and I haven’t eaten meat in a year or so. Well, you’ll be excited to know that everything is clean and organized now.
Why am I telling you this? Several reasons. The first being that I have nothing else on my mind right now so this is what you get to enjoy reading about. The second is that I’ve been contemplating not doing make-ahead meals this winter and sticking to my prep-a-thon Sundays and parting with my extra freezer all together. Admittedly, this is causing me a bit of anxiety. My little freezer has been with me through about 7 moves and at one point, in its infancy, housed more frozen peroggi’s and pizza pops than most Safeway stores. Ah, the memories. As we continue forward in our journey toward minimalism, I know that this is something that we don’t really need. But as with anything, it’s tough to let go.
