Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Under Armour through FitFluential. Even if it wasn’t, I’d still be taking part in the campaign and I’d still be asking you to join my team and help me redefine the female athlete.
Last week, I posted about my struggles with running and comparing myself to others and how this ultimately left me feeling inferior. I’m not fast, I’m not elite and I am a far cry from being the poster-child for running. I’ve come to realize that having fun while running is more important to me than being especially gifted at it. That’s not to say that I don’t want to improve, race, PR and kick some serious azz. BUT, I don’t want to put so much pressure on myself to do it if it means taking a mental kick in the crotch every time I toe the line at an event.
Right now, Under Armour is hosting part III of their amazing “What’s Beautiful” Campaign. This is a campaign to redefine the female athlete and so much of this message resonates with me and inspires me. It basically says that anyone can be an athlete and that it’s not about being the best overall, it’s about challenging yourself to be the best you can be. This is a lesson I’ve begged myself to learn over the years and often times, I “get” the message but fail to put it into practice. Just as often, my fear of succeeding is almost more overwhelming than my fear of failure and because of that, I pull myself back, just shy of leaving my comfort zone.
Imagine what we could all accomplish with a little discomfort?
I’m taking part in this campaign for the next 8 weeks and I hope you’ll join me. I have created team Limitless for anyone and everyone who wants to push past their limits and conquer their fears. Maybe it’s signing up for that first 5k, maybe it’s joining a gym or learning how to swim. Maybe you want to run your fastest mile, PR a half marathon, run a full marathon. Whatever it is that you fear trying, let’s encourage each other to conquer that fear and push past our limits.
Want to start your own team? Even better! Let’s show the world who we are and why we are athletes. Check out the site, set up a profile, declare your goal and then start kicking butt! Join one team, join a dozen teams or start your own. Maybe win some swag along the way!
Not interested in a team but still want to follow some awesome athletes? No problem! My personal profile is here. I’d love to cheer you on in your quest to eat some serious goals!
I’ve discovered that the training and participating is only a small part of the overall picture to being an athlete. What hinders me most is the mental battle I go through each and every time I approach discomfort. I want to shatter that fear and rise above it because I know I have the potential to be and do so much more than I am. I want to team up with others who go through the same thing, whether it’s falling victim to insecurities, getting stuck in the comparison trap or not pushing hard enough to see progress, we all set limits.
Now let’s shatter them.
