This last week, I hit a point of complete and utter frustration. I got sick again. This act has really gotten old for me. This winter has been brutal for germs and I have managed to catch nearly every single one that’s gone around. I went through this a couple of years ago and it was completely deflating. It has me wondering if I’m doing something wrong or if I’m just the product of some really bad luck this year.
So far, since October’s half marathon (and the beginning of cold and flu season here) I’ve had no less than 4 bouts of illness, including two sinus infections. Each time, I was out of commission for no less than 4 days, this last time, I’ve been out for a week. And then there’s the kids and hubby, who also get sick.
I eat well, get as much sleep as I can (I have small kids, there’s only so much one can do right?). These days, I manage about 6-7 hours a night and have been prioritizing going to bed at a reasonable hour. I’ve gradually been increasing my exercise routine to make sure I’m not overdoing it but still feeling challenged. Yet I still seem to be prone to illness this year.
So this week, I’m back on the mend (again!) and hoping to get back on my running plan. I have the same standing plan that I have every week: Run, Swim, Bike as my body and schedule will allow. We’re hovering in the -45 range of temps with the wind factored in so I will be dreadmilling it this week. I’d like to get to a spin class this week and pack swim on Saturday. Wish me luck!
You’re turn: how do you fight the germs? do you have a go-to routine that keeps you healthy through the cold months of Winter?
