Motivation Monday: Beating the Summer Heat

It. Is. Hot.

So hot that even Fit Boy hasn’t wanted to go outside.

Now that’s hot.

Last week was supposed to be my unofficial start to my half marathon training and let’s just say that things haven’t gone quite as planned so far. Mostly because of the heat and my kids.

Go Figure.

Not all of it is bad though. We’ve had some great family time together these past few days, celebrating Canada Day. But along with the hot weather has been an inability of the little ones to sleep well because of the heat (even though we have air conditioning). This means the big ones (aka me and hubby) have not slept well either.

I did try and get a solo 5 miles done on Saturday but even at 10am, it was already pushing 85 and my delicate Canadian body does not enjoy running in that kind of heat. I powered up with my Nuun, visor, tunes and set out. The thing about the area I live in is that we have some awesome pedestrian paths just steps away. Awesome right?! Yes!

Except…there is no shelter from the sun. After about 2.5 miles the heat was getting to me and I was starting to feel sick. Not wanting to risk heat stroke (or puking on someone’s driveway), I took a short-cut home and clocked 3 miles instead of the planned 5. Better safe than sorry!

Check out THAT sexy arm pit stain!

This week’s training plan is 3 running days, 1 swimming days. With the weather supposed to be steaming hot all week, I will have to be creative. I’m already mentally preparing myself for an early morning run on Saturday!

I hear ya – I am training for my first marathon, and it’s been way too hot. I’m lucky to have a treadmill, so a lot of times I just get on that with the fans blowing on me, but I miss my outside runs :)

It has been downright miserable by 9 am here, so I totally understand the need to cut the run short. I hope your little ones start sleeping better so you can get that rest you need!

  3. Hugs! You are not alone – I hate running in the heat too hence why I’ve done very few fall races and end up using the whole winter to drop the 10lbs I gain each summer :)

  5. It is hot!!!!!! I mentioned on Resa’s post that I play the “what’s the temperature now” game on my phone so I can see what it’s going to be and what’s the best time to go out and run. It stinks!
I say add more swim days!!! You can aqua jog! It will keep you fit, it’s fun and then when it cools down you can go back to full fledge training. :-)
