Body After Baby: Learning the Ropes

At 5 weeks postpartum, I’m ready to jump (gently) back into some activity. I’ve tested the waters a bit going for walks with the kids, playing with Fit Boy the only way we know how: running around, spinning and lots of picking him up (which during one particularly energetic outdoor play session resulted in him accidentally kicking me in the face…ouch) and running some more. So far, so good. My back is a bit sore by the end of the day (likely due to my diastasis and weakened core) but I’m listening to my body and paying attention to what it’s telling me and doing my core strengthening exercises.

With my last birth, I started running again 5 weeks postpartum. I thought this made me really bad ass but in reality, it made me really dumb ass. It was way too soon and delayed the healing of my diastasis by months. I didn’t get it at the time but now I can see loud and clear that going back to exercise early after having a baby isn’t wise if your body isn’t ready and waiting until it is isn’t stupid or for the weak and unmotivated. I know I’m motivated….but I also know that my body isn’t ready and needs more time to heal.

Patience is not a virtue that I possess but I’m learning.

Slowly.

For now, I will enjoy the play time I have with my kids and eagerly await the day I can lace up my shoes and head out for a short run.

Ready to walk with my less-than-eager beavers

At least one of us is happy to be out.

I bet it’s hard to be patient, but good for you! How exciting that you’re getting back into things. Just think, since you’re being patient now, in the long run you’ll be healthier and ready to get back to more intense workouts.
