2012 is going to be a tough year. My last day of work is January 20th and after that, I will be on maternity leave for the next 54 weeks. Yes…weeks. We’re beyond blessed in Canada to have that much time to be home with out little ones. After that I will be heading, once again into unknown territory: Mother of 2. The adjustment to one child was very hard for me. I fought through post-partum depression, a child who did nothing but cry for the first 5 months of his life and generally just trying to find myself amidst a desire to live a healthy balanced life. A lot of those same struggles will come up again as I go from raising one child, to two. I’ll officially be outnumbered and the challenges of losing the baby weight, getting back to an active lifestyle and finding the time to workout and train for some races will be extremely challenging. I’ve unofficially dubbed 2012 my year of Awesome Balance because in the end, that’s what I strive to do most of all.
My goals are both lofty and attainable but it will all come down to balance, commitment and support from those around me. If I don’t have all 3, I won’t have much success so I will definitely need a game plan.
Goal #1: Get back to Running as soon as I get the post-partum OK from the powers that be. Plan: Start from scratch. I’ll do a couch-to-5K program and work from there. When needed, I’ll take the kids in the jogging stroller while I train so not to miss out on a run for lack of childcare. Possible Road Blocks: Motivating myself to get out and run when I’m going to be tired, both physically and mentally most days from life with a newborn and 2 year old. Oh…and I don’t own a double jogging stroller.
Goal #2: Run a half marathon before the year is up. Plan: After I “graduate” from the C25K program, I’ll start a half marathon training plan with a fall half marathon planned. Again, I’ll bring the kids with me in the jogging stroller when needed. Possible Road Blocks: Aside from what I mentioned in my first goal, I’ll be training in the summer, which can be very unforgivable in terms of heat and humidity. One option will be to run in the morning before my hubby leaves for work, which means getting up as early as 4:30 (depending on distance) to fuel, run, shower and nurse the baby (or pump for later).
Goal #3: Speed it up. I’m a fairly slow runner and would love to PR at 5k, 10k and half marathon distances. Plan: Train consistently, cross-train effectively. Balance my workouts, incorporate things like swimming, biking and strength training to help my body function as efficiently as possible. Properly fuelling my body is also a must. Possible Road Blocks: Time, energy and injury. The first two I’ve talked about already. I have had a tendency to get injured when I don’t train wisely so I will need to be mindful of my body and listen to it when it’s protesting.
Goal #4: Better food for Better health. We’ve made huge strides in the past 2 years to better the quality and lessen the quantity of the foods we eat and buy processed/prepackaged. We still have a long way to go. Plan: More meal planning, smarter shopping, paying more attention to what I’m bringing into the house. Possible Road Blocks: Sometimes (ok more than sometimes) it’s just easier to order a pizza or throw some frozen peroggi’s into boiling water. Being deliberate and planning will be a challenge.
I know I will come up with more goals and as the year progresses, I may even change my goals if I find what I have here now doesn’t mesh with the reality of my day to day life. I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to kicking some serious azz in 2012!
