How I Eat Healthy at Work

I work a fairly early day. I leave the house at 6:50, drop Fit Boy off at day care at 7:00 and am at work by 7:30(ish). I relish every second of sleep I can get my greedy little hands on so most days, I just grab a quick snack while I’m getting ready and eat breakfast and lunch at the office.

We have a huge cafeteria at work, complete with a chef, several sous chefs and a lot of food options for both breakfast and lunch. Very few of them are healthy. In order to “encourage” workers to spend their hard earned dollars at the cafeteria, we have only 3 microwaves to service about 2000 employees.

Now I don’t mind the occasional indulgence at the cafeteria but let’s face it, it’s not only expensive but unhealthy to be eating there every single day (case in point: one of our popular “lighter fare” options are deep fried spring rolls or battered fish sticks…eeewwwwww!)

Here’s my arsenal that I keep at my desk to help me stay on track and not be tempted by the cafeteria (or vending machine) gods:

I have my kettle, tea pot, mug w/ coffee filter, mini cooker and dish detergent. It’s not much but believe me when I say that it saves me on a daily basis. Being able to make my own coffee or tea keeps me from a trip to the coffee shop where an over-calorized drink and maybe a muffin or cookie. The mini-cooker is gold for me. I can make a week’s worth of steel cut oats on Sunday night, divide it up and have a nice filling breakfast that I can warm up in the cooker with milk, nuts and dried fruit. Yum! I can also use it to reheat soups, stews etc. That way I’m not spending my lunch hour waiting in line to re-heat my food (not great since I generally spend my lunch hour time at the gym).

Question: How do you incorporate your healthy lifestyle into work to prevent temptation from rearing its ugly head?

I am a mom to 2 beautiful boys and love everything health and fitness. I am dedicated to improving my own health, setting a good example for healthy living for my family and hopefully inspiring and educating others to do the same in their lives.

  1. Oh, this is brilliant! Love the coffee mug with its own filter, and using the mini crock to reheat food is a great idea. When I worked a desk job, I kept dried fruit and nuts in my desk drawer to keep the munchies at bay. Thankfully, it was a small office so the line for the microwave was never too long and I packed my lunch most days.

    Hi ,
I am a french woman. Your advices are good but be carefull with nutts.

If you want some advice about healthy meals ,i will help you with pleasure.
When i want to eat (but when it’s more temptation than food) i first drink a big glass of water and i eat fruits (but not all kinds of fruits it depends).I usually eat apples, oranges, pears, and when i am tired a banana but as they contain more sugar (as grappefruit) i avoid them (i keep them for sports).

During all day long i drink green tea (not coffe) .Here in France we have 3 meals ( i’ve read that it depends in America.People who take care off their weight try to eat 3 meals a day,but those who don’t care eata ll day long).

i find your blog very nice. If you want to talk with me ,no problem.
    best regards
