Before you do anything else today, go grab your 2012 calendar and circle June 03, 2012 in red.
Why you might ask? That is the day Becel will be hosting their 25th Ride for Heart event in Toronto, Canada and if you like cycling and raising money for a cause that will affect each and every one of us to some degree in our lifetimes, this is an event you do not want to miss out on.
What is Ride for Heart? For the past 25 years, this even has been raising funds toward research helping Canadians live longer, fuller lives. Every year as many as 250,000 years of life are lost in Canada alone due to cardiovascular disease. 9 out of 10 Canadians are at risk of heart disease or stroke. I’m going to say that again because that statistic absolutely floored me. 9 out of 10 Canadians are at risk. We all have the power to change that statistic, both in living healthy, active lives as well as promoting and helping raise both funds and awareness of the dangers of heart disease and ways to prevent and even reverse it.
Last year 13,000 riders took to the Don Valley Parkway and rode 25km, 50km or even 75km for a great cause. This both motivates and inspires me. What better way to raise money than to train for an event and put your money where your heart is!
Heart disease and Stroke is the number 1 killer of women.
Heart disease claims 1 in 3 Canadians before their time.
Childhood obesity has tripled in the last 25 years putting our kids at risk for premature death, disability and critical illness.
How can I Help?
Register for the Ride: Space is limited so if you’re interested, register now to ensure you get a space. There are different distances and options for the ride so be sure to check out the route that suits you best.
Donate/Sponsor/Fundraise: Each rider over the age of 18 needs to raise a minimum of $100 in order to be eligible to ride on June 03, 2012. Even if you can’t ride, you can still sponsor a rider or team. Skip your morning latte for a few days and donate those dollars toward a rider.
VIP fundraising is vital to the cause. Very Important Philanthropists receive special recognition and benefits before, during and after event day, June 3, 2012. If you register as a VIP before November 30 and commit to fundraising $1,000 or more to support life-giving research into heart disease and stroke to receive a free VIP-in-training Louis Garneau technical shirt, waived registration fee ($40) and the unique experience of cycling traffic-free down the Gardiner & DVP.
Spread the Word: Heart disease affects us all and now more than ever, we have a responsibility to educate one another on the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. We owe it not only to ourselves but to those we love and care about the most to be what we can in our lives to ensure that we can beat, treat and overcome heart disease.
I’m completely excited about this event. I won’t be able to participate next year as I’ll have a 4 month old and travel is unlikely for me but if I can swing it, I’ll be riding with you in spirit locally that day. I would encourage anyone out there who can’t be there to do the same. Let’s form a virtual Ride for Heart to show our support!
